Through bioinformatics tools, gene clusters have been identified in the genomes of the obligate oil-degrading bacteria Alcanivorax dieselolei and Alcanivorax pacificus that appear to encode novel siderophore (small molecule iron chelators) biosynthetic pathways. The goals of the proposed work are isolating and structurally characterizing the siderophores produced by these bacteria, evaluating their iron-binding properties, and elucidating the corresponding biosynthetic pathways. This work will further our understanding of oil-degrading bacteria and their growth strategies in iron-scarce ocean environments, informing microbial-based approaches to remediating marine oil spills.
