We are pleased to announce that Dr. Mahdi Abu-Omar has joined UC Santa Barbara in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry and the Department of Chemical Engineering. He expects to arrive on campus in the summer of 2016. He will hold an Endowed Chair in the Mellichamp Academic Initiative in Sustainability, focusing on Green Chemistry. Mahdi comes to UCSB from Purdue University where he is the R. B. Wetherill Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Professor in the School of Chemical Engineering. Prior to his appointment at Purdue University he was a member of the faculty at UCLA. He received his B.S. in Chemistry from Hampden-Sydney College in 1992, his Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry from Iowa State University in 1996, and was a Postdoctoral Scholar in bioinorganic chemistry at the California Institute of Technology.
Mahdi is the Associate Director of C3Bio (Center for direct Catalytic Conversion of Biomass to Biofuels), one of the Department of Energy, Office of Science’s, Energy Frontier Research Centers. His research interests include the design of catalysts and processes for converting renewable feedstocks to valuable chemicals, materials, and fuels, as well as bioinspired catalysis pertinent to remediation of environmental contaminants.
